Meet the Performers

Joseph Monticello, flute

Flutist Joseph Monticello’s playing has been praised by both the New York Times and Wall Street Journal as “graceful" and for being as “exciting as the singers.”

Equally at home on both modern and historical flutes, Joseph enjoys a multi-faceted career as principal flutist of Boston Baroque and assistant principal flutist with Palm Beach Symphony orchestra, splitting his time between Miami and Boston. During the summer season, Joseph performs as Second Flute and Piccolo with the Central City Opera in Colorado.

A frequent performer with the Miami-based Nu Deco Ensemble, Joseph has shared the stage with genre-defining artists Angélique Kidjo, Wyclef Jean, Tank and the Bangas, Masego, Cory Wong, Cory Henry, and Luke James and has been featured on several commercially-released albums, including the chart-topping “Paint the Roses” collaboration with Larkin Poe, which spent four weeks on the Classical, Classical Crossover, and Blues Billboard Charts. Joseph’s playing was also featured on the 2022 Disney film “Rosaline,” as well as the “Janitsch: Trio Sonatas” album by The Berlin Friday Academy.

Joseph has also performed with the Handel & Haydn Society, Les Arts Florissants, Philharmonia Baroque, Portland Baroque, Sarasota Orchestra, Palm Beach Opera, The Berlin Friday Academy, One Found Sound (SF), Kaleidoscope (LA), Bach Collegium San Diego, Florida Grand Opera, the Smithsonian Academy Orchestra, New York Baroque Incorporated, Philharmonie Austin, Seraphic Fire, IlluminArts, and as principal flute of the Teatro Nuovo festival orchestra, specializing in the historically informed presentation of Bel Canto opera on period-appropriate instruments.

A fierce proponent of Japanese traditional music, Joseph has studied Nagauta and Yamatogaku shamisen in the US and in Japan, where he made his debut at the National Theatre in Tokyo under the given name Yamato Josho (大和晟笙).

In his free time, Joe enjoys searching for the holy grail of iced coffees, wherever his travels take him.

Joseph is a graduate of The Juilliard School, Oberlin College and Conservatory, and Interlochen Arts Academy High School.

Mark Dupere, cello

Cellist and conductor Mark Dupere is Associate Professor of Music at Lawrence University Conservatory of Music, where he is the Director of Orchestral Studies and conductor of the Lawrence Symphony Orchestra. Dupere is also the conductor of Philharmonie Austin, an exciting period instrument orchestra comprised of top performers from across the US.

As a cellist, Dupere has performed throughout Europe as an orchestral and chamber musician. He has performed with Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, Haagsche Hofmuzieck, Anima Eterna, and as an apprentice with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment in London. Dupere was an “Emerging Artist” at the Victoria Bach Festival, performed in the Leipzig Bach Competition, and was recently named a national finalist in the American Prize in Conducting.
